Amazing La Berarde & massif Les Ecrins

About two years ago we went to the national park Les Ecrins - to La Berarde and its amazing Vénéon valley. At that time we hiked south until La Pilatte Glacier (previous photo-report is here). This time we tried to explore the northern part of the valley and went to see the famous among climbers La Meije mountain.

We went by bus from Grenoble and due to this and other factors had a pretty limited time-schedule. Anyway it is pretty amazing that you can pay 6 euros 60 cents and within three hours go by public transport to almost 2,000 meters altitude to the central part of the national park.

On the way we passed Bourg-Oisans, popular thanks to Tour de France and having cute morning market, as well as commune of St.-Cristophe-en-Oisans and Venosc, a gateway to Les Deux Alpes.

Due to such combination, on the way to La Berarde one may see many cyclists, people with mountain bikes, skies or snowboards, as well as kayakers, rafters, para-gliders and rock-climbers. Clearly french people really know what to do with their weekends or holidays!

La Berard is very nice, even on Saturday during the most touristic / vacancies period of the year, it is very calm and pretty village and there are only rare hikers and climbers on mountain trails.

Sky is crystal blue, air is chilly in the morning and mountain torrents are transparent and cold. Wonderful destination for a day hike - the proof to these words is shown below.

Grand Veymont, Vercors

Before I forget exact names of mountains which we hiked last year, I will try to post at least their photos. So here is a hike to Grand Veymont at Vercors last summer - a very beautiful mountain with a nice view to Mount Aiguille and surroundings.

Mont Aiguille

A view to the central part of Vercors.

This long ridge stretches all way down to Grenoble. (It looks pretty impressive from the air when one arrives by an airplane and flies over Grenoble to Lyon - see here my previous photo).

My favorite hike at Chartreuse mountains - le Grand Som

Peak Grand Som is located almost in the center of Chartreuse massif, just above the famous Grande Chartreuse monastery (since 1084). The monastery lives thanks to profits coming from sales of Chartreuse liqueur. As I understood from one of my colleagues buildings of the monastery were destroyed by snow avalanches several times during its existence.

The hike starts just after a passage along the walls of the monastery.

After a long forest-part, one finds himself at one of the most scenic parts of the massif (in my opinion). As soon as you get to high elevation, you may see 360 degree view of Chartreuse while standing almost in the middle of this mountain system. We really liked it!

At the back: Petit Som (1722 m a.s.l.)

Approaching Grand Som - a lot of sheep's dung!

View onto the Grande Chartreuse monastery from Grand Som peak (2026 m a.s.l).

Way back goes again along the monastery...

A great Sunday-escape from Grenoble - just about an hour by bus!
